another guest appearance on MDR

Once again, Dirk Winkler, Professor of Neurosurgery at Leipzig University Hospital AöR, University of Leipzig, was involved in the filming of the well-known medical series “In aller Freundschaft” and our spatial computing and 3D printing developments were used (Fraunhofer IWU).

2nd place at Saxon Start-up Award

On June 19, 2024, the startup next3D was awarded 2nd place in the Saxon Start-up Award at the Saxon Innovation Conference in Dresden. Next3D emerged from Leipzig University and the Fraunhofer IWU. With the Exist funding program, the transfer from science to clinical routine was demonstrated.

With the mixed reality software platform data goggles, surgeons can determine the current position of the instrument in the patient. A crosshair visualizes the position in the MRI/CT images. This shows the distance to the target area or to risk structures such as blood vessels or nerves.

Presentation of the navigation solution at Apple Development Center

Our surgical navigation development for the Vision Pro convinced Apple. A personal tour of the Apple Spaceship and a joint lunch meeting were important to the Director of the Marketing Division “Health - Care” in order to develop concepts for a cooperation. We are excited and look forward to the next steps.

3D-printed caps for sterilization bottles

Sterilizing agents were in short supply throughout Germany, but are essential to prevent the further spread of the novel coronavirus. The pharmacy at Leipzig University Hospital therefore began to produce its own sterilant and collected the sterilization bottles already in use at the hospital for refilling. As these bottles were without lids due to their use in manual dispensers, the aim was to design and manufacture 3D-printed caps within 24 hours.

In the first step, an original cap was scanned with a computer tomograph in the radiology department. The resulting virtual model was used as a template to optimize it using computer-aided design (CAD) software. The caps were then produced from a biocompatible and steam-sterilizable plastic using a 3D printer. Before use, the caps were also cleaned and steam sterilized in the central sterilization department at Leipzig University Hospital.

The Leipzig emergency ventilation system from Next3D
Rapid support in the emergency care of Covid19 patients through a 3D-printed emergency ventilator developed by Leipzig University Hospital and Fraunhofer IWU, the testing and modification of which was supported by WHZ. This development took only 7 days. If there are not enough high-tech ventilation systems available, this should be available to doctors as a last option. It is not a certified medical device, but is intended as a last choice. However, the Next3D working group at Leipzig University Hospital is certified in accordance with the medical technology standard ISO13485 and is generally permitted to manufacture and market patient-specific 3D-printed instruments and models, which are considered custom-made products in accordance with the Medical Devices Act. The system is medically supported by Prof. Dirk Winkler (Deputy Director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Neurosurgery at Leipzig University Hospital), who also has many years of experience as an emergency physician. Partners: Leipzig University, Leipzig University Hospital, West Saxon University of Applied Sciences Zwickau, Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU.
